The Day it All Began

Writer's picture: Julie BonsallJulie Bonsall

We did it. We closed on the house. We are officially Florida residents. The excitement (from me) is palpable. The nerves from Joe are unending.

We closed on the house rather late and in November, the sun sets pretty early so we decided to wait until the next day to break into our new home. So the following we day, we anxiously arrive with tools in hand to begin the process of turning this house into our home.

First thing's first--remove the carpet.

So I begin to pull up the carpet while Joe is removing doors and trim (because he is talented and as you'll see I only do grunt work). The third bedroom came out fine, second one was easy, but the first one... the first one had a blue plastic-like membrane under it. Which I found odd, but because I have no knowledge of anything, I press on and continue to remove the carpet and tack strips. Then I pull back the blue membrane.

And that was when we discovered the portal to the House from Hell.

Beneath the blue membrane stood a puddle of water that would splash if you had jumped in it. The house instantly filled up with a smell that can only be described as dead fish and mildew. It was disgusting. And terrifying. Joe came into the room and investigated. The foundation was soaking wet. There's currently a very popular song called "The Bones". "When the bones are good, the rest don't matter"...hmmmmm.... these bones are soaking wet. So what does that mean?

Bedroom three of three, minus doors and carpet.

Bedroom one of three--soaking wet foundation.

We ended up stopping for the day, because I was panicking and because the smell was so terrible that we could not stand it. We hoped that in the morning, the floor would be dry and that would be the end to that very weird first day.

But the House from Hell had other plans.
